＜statement＞

「断片しか残らない」

　道端に転がっている白い塊は時間の海を漂ううちに細部が摩耗した大理石のイルカの頭部だった。デルフォイに向かうバスから見えた一瞬の光景。40年前だから夢かもしれない。

　絵画でも彫刻でも細部は波打ち際だ。物質と像が寄せては返す波のように逡巡する表面に、作家の決断の痕跡がそこに現れる。しかしながら、今、ここで格闘している細部など、やがて時間の海に揉まれて消えてしまうだろう。

　なぜなのだろう。あのイルカも白い波だった。大理石の粒子もキャンバスの布目も隆起した絵の具も現実の波だった。だから現れる像の細部では波の動きは止まる。しかし時間は止まることがない。

　大理石を彫っていると49年前の一瞬が戻ってくる。つかみどころの無いぬるりとした塊も、しばらく見ていると石の粒子が泡立ち、そこには断片しか残っていなかった。

Only fragments remain

　The white mass lying on the roadside was the head of a marble dolphin, its details worn away as it drifted through the sea of time. A fleeting glimpse from the bus on the way to Delphoi, 40 years ago, so it could have been a dream.

　In both painting and sculpture, the details are the lapping of the waves. On the surface, where matter and image hesitate like waves that come and go, traces of the artist's decision appear. However, the details that we are struggling with here and now will soon be lost in the sea of time.

　Why is this? The dolphins were white waves. The particles of marble, the fabric of the canvas, and the raised paint were real waves. Therefore, in the details of the image that appear, the movement of the waves stops. But time never stops.

　Carving the marble brings back a moment from 49 years ago. The elusive slimy mass, after looking at it for a while, the particles of stone bubbled up and there remained only fragments.
